Why Do I Need a Prescription or Documentation to Buy a CPAP Machine?

Why Do I Need a Prescription or Documentation to Buy a CPAP Machine?
Why Do I Need a Prescription or Documentation to Buy a CPAP Machine? Why Do I Need a Prescription or Documentation to Buy a CPAP Machine?

When you are ready to buy a CPAP machine online, you may be surprised to see that S-Med asks for a prescription, medical documentation or information about your previous CPAP therapy before we can ship the machine.

You may understandably wonder:

Why is this necessary?

The answer is simple: because we believe buying a CPAP machine should be part of a properly informed treatment journey — not simply an online transaction.

At S-Med, quality of care matters just as much as the quality of the equipment we supply.

Our approach is designed to make sure that the CPAP equipment you purchase is appropriate for your circumstances, while giving you access to the support and expertise you need before, during and after your purchase.

Our professional standards

S-Med is also listed as a Corporate Member of the Association for Respiratory Technology & Physiology (ARTP).

ARTP develops Standards of Care for sleep services, including guidance covering CPAP treatment and the supply of CPAP equipment. ARTP describes these standards as minimum standards of professional practice intended to support high-quality care across healthcare settings.

S-MED Limited is also registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for regulated activities including Treatment of disease, disorder or injury and Diagnostic and screening procedures.

These professional and regulatory frameworks are an important part of how we approach quality and patient care.

Why does S-Med ask for documentation before supplying a CPAP machine?

CPAP is not simply another piece of consumer electronics.

A CPAP machine is a medical device used to treat sleep-disordered breathing, most commonly obstructive sleep apnoea. It delivers positive airway pressure through a mask to help keep the upper airway open during sleep. NICE recommends CPAP as a treatment option for adults with symptomatic obstructive sleep apnoea, with treatment and monitoring forming part of specialist sleep care.

That is why the clinical information surrounding the treatment matters.

Before supplying a CPAP machine, we want to establish that there is appropriate evidence that CPAP is relevant to you.

This might be a prescription, a sleep study report, a letter from a healthcare professional, evidence of previous CPAP therapy, or other relevant clinical documentation.

Our aim is not to make the buying process difficult. It is to make sure that the equipment we supply fits into an appropriate treatment pathway.

What do the ARTP Standards of Care say?

The ARTP Standards of Care for Sleep Apnoea Services – Treatment provide guidance for providers of CPAP therapy in the UK.

The standards state that companies supplying CPAP devices directly to patients should have appropriate clinical review and that CPAP devices should not be supplied in the UK without written confirmation from a specialist practitioner. The document also sets out expectations around technical support, patient support and after-sales service.

Importantly, the ARTP document describes its code as a Voluntary Code. In other words, these standards should not be confused with a claim that ARTP itself is UK legislation. They are professional standards that S-Med chooses to follow as part of our commitment to quality care.

For us, that distinction matters.

We do not ask for documentation simply because it is another box to tick.

We ask because we believe that good CPAP care starts with making sure the treatment is appropriate.

What does CPAP documentation actually mean?

“Documentation” can sound complicated, but it does not necessarily mean a particular form or a specific document.

Depending on your circumstances, relevant information may include:

  • A prescription or letter from a healthcare professional confirming your diagnosis and need for CPAP
  • A sleep study or sleep apnoea diagnostic report
  • Clinical documentation relating to your CPAP treatment
  • Evidence that you are already using CPAP
  • Other relevant medical information that helps us understand your CPAP therapy

Our team can review the information you have and let you know whether it is suitable.

Not sure what to provide? Just ask us.

We would much rather help you understand what is needed than leave you trying to work it out yourself.

What if I am already using CPAP?

If you are an existing CPAP user, the process may be more straightforward.

For example, you may already have information relating to your diagnosis or treatment history. This can help us understand your existing therapy and the equipment you are looking to replace or continue using.

Our current CPAP purchase process allows us to verify either your CPAP therapy history or relevant medical documentation after checkout.

If you are struggling to find your paperwork, do not assume that you cannot purchase a machine.

Contact us and we can explain what information may be useful in your particular situation.

What if I have not been diagnosed with sleep apnoea yet?

A CPAP machine should not be the starting point for guessing whether you have sleep apnoea.

The first step is understanding what is happening when you sleep.

Sleep apnoea can cause symptoms such as:

  • Loud snoring
  • Breathing that stops and starts during sleep
  • Gasping, snorting or choking during sleep
  • Frequent waking
  • Excessive daytime tiredness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Morning headaches

Because these symptoms can have different causes, testing is an important part of understanding what is happening.

The NHS explains that people suspected of having sleep apnoea may be referred for sleep testing, and that testing can often be performed at home. Sleep tests help clinicians determine whether sleep apnoea is present and assess its severity.

NICE also recommends home respiratory polygraphy for people with suspected obstructive sleep apnoea.

Need a sleep test?

S-Med also offers a Home Sleep Test for people who need to start their diagnostic journey.

A diagnosis gives you something much more valuable than simply knowing that you snore or feel tired: it provides clinical information that can help determine the most appropriate treatment pathway.

Why equipment quality matters too

The care process does not stop once a prescription has been provided.

The quality and performance of the CPAP equipment itself also matter.

ARTP has separate Standards of Care covering the technical and performance characteristics of CPAP devices, including independent testing of relevant equipment. ARTP maintains a published register of devices that have been tested against its technical and performance standards.

UK medical device requirements also apply to medical devices placed on the Great Britain market, with requirements covering matters such as conformity, registration and the responsibilities of manufacturers, importers and distributors.

For customers, the important point is simple:

The machine is only one part of the service.

Quality equipment, appropriate clinical information, reliable delivery and access to support all form part of a good CPAP experience.

Why don't I need documentation to buy a CPAP mask?

Our documentation requirement applies specifically to CPAP machines.

It does not apply in the same way to accessories such as:

  • CPAP masks
  • Tubing
  • Humidifiers
  • Replacement parts and other accessories

This means you can purchase the equipment you need to maintain your existing CPAP setup without going through the same machine verification process.

The additional checks apply when purchasing a CPAP machine itself.

What happens after I order a CPAP machine?

We have designed the process to be as simple as possible.

1. Place your order

Select the CPAP machine that you need and complete checkout.

2. We contact you

After checkout, our team will contact you to briefly verify your CPAP therapy history or review your medical documentation.

3. Provide your information

Simply send us the relevant documentation or information requested by our team.

4. We review it

We check that the information is appropriate for the equipment being purchased.

5. Your order can proceed

We aim to make this process helpful, clear and straightforward.

We are here to help — not to put barriers in your way

We understand that buying a CPAP machine can already feel like a lot to navigate.

You may know that you have sleep apnoea but no longer have your paperwork.

You may be an existing CPAP user replacing an older machine.

You may have recently received your sleep study results.

Or perhaps you are simply not sure what documentation you have is relevant.

That is exactly where our team can help.

You do not need to know all the answers before contacting us.

Our role is to help you understand the next step and make the process as straightforward as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I legally need a prescription to buy a CPAP machine in the UK?

S-Med asks for appropriate documentation before supplying CPAP machines as part of our clinical care and quality policy.

ARTP's Standards of Care state that CPAP devices should not be supplied in the UK without written confirmation from an appropriate specialist practitioner, and ARTP describes its related code as voluntary professional guidance rather than legislation.

Our policy is therefore designed around responsible clinical practice and quality of care.

What can I use as CPAP documentation?

This can depend on your circumstances. Relevant information may include a prescription, sleep study report, clinical letter, evidence of previous CPAP therapy or other appropriate medical documentation.

Contact our team and we can tell you what is suitable.

I already use CPAP. Do I still need documentation?

We may ask you for information confirming your existing CPAP therapy or relevant medical history. Our team will explain what is needed based on your circumstances.

Do I need a prescription to buy a CPAP mask?

No. The documentation requirement described on this page applies to CPAP machines, not ordinary CPAP accessories such as masks and tubing.

I don't have a diagnosis yet. What should I do?

Speak to your GP or another appropriate healthcare professional about your symptoms and whether sleep testing is appropriate. A sleep study can help determine whether sleep apnoea is present and how severe it is.

S-Med also offers a Home Sleep Test for customers who need to begin the diagnostic process.

What if I am unsure whether my documents are suitable?

Please contact us before placing your order. Our team will be happy to explain what information you may need.
